Passenger ridership hits fresh high in 2014-15

Released by ORR on June 4, ridership statistics for 2014-15 show another record year with passenger-journeys up 4-2% on the year before at 1-65 billion. This represents an increase of 69-5% since 2002-03, when 975-5 mill-lion passenger-journeys were made as the network was recovering from the aftermath of the Hatfield derailment. Passenger-km were also at a new record level, up by 4-5% on 2013-14. In comparison, timetabled train-km were 1% higher year on year. Ridership growth was consistent across all three passenger sectors, with London Et South East showing a 4-3% rise in journeys, and Regional and Long-Distance both 4%. However, non-fran-chised operators recorded a 12-9% increase in passenger-journeys and a similar rise (13%) in passenger-km, but at constant timetabled train-km. Passenger revenue reached £8-87bn in 2014-15, of which £63m represented receipts by non-franchised operators. Overall revenue was up by 7-4% on 2013-14.
