Liverpool - Manchester goes live

Operated by Northern Rail, EMU No 319 363 became the first electric train to carry passengers between Liverpool and Manchester on March 5 when it worked the 06.16 service from Liverpool Lime Street to Manchester Airport. The second of Northern's Class 319s to enter service worked the following train, the 07.16 departure from Lime Street. Northern is to receive a total of 20 four-car Class 319s, six more than originally agreed by DfT in order to make six Class 156 DMUs available to sublease to TransPennine Express. Before entering service with Northern, the Class 319s are being refurbished and are receiving passenger information systems as well as controls to enable the conductor to operate the train doors from any door position.
