As part of its contribution to the government target of building 160 000 new homes, Network Rail is now finalising plans to release 200 sites that could accommodate a total of 12 000 new homes. With major development proposals already progressing in York, Taunton and Swindon, NR says that the largest 20 sites have the potential for 5 000 new homes. 'Earmarked projects' include the former Exchange station site in Manchester, which could accommodate 700 homes, according to NR, as well as a major scheme at Chesterton near Cambridge which would release land for 800 homes.
