Speaking to RBI on April 25, Rail Minister Claire Perry insisted that the government remains fully committed to rolling out smart ticketing on National Rail, despite suggestions that the £80tn South East Flexible Ticketing programme had been abandoned. According to the minister, the only change has been to look to the industry to take a stronger lead in developing smart ticketing. The best way to achieve change is through franchising', she said. 'It's always the best price and we can get a lot of innovation.' 'SEFT is, I think, the best way to give season ticket holders a good product that interacts with TfL, and TfL's walled garden is the technological challenge for any of these solutions because 70% of journeys touch London, and it works', she said. There were now five TOCs live on SEFT, with Greater Anglia 'the first to be entirely using that back office which we paid for - about £50m has been spent already or committed and there is more to come - we just need to work out where best to spend it and that will be delivered.'
