Shipping Spent Nuclear Fuel from the Czech Republic's NRI to the Russian Federation for Reprocessing

Preparing and implementing a shipment of HEU spent fuel requires solving very demandingrnproblems requiring the cooperation of a number of organizations. With significant technicalrnand financial aid from the U.S. government and the DOE, the Czech Republic became a pilotrncountry to carry out a shipment from the NRI to the Russian Federation by means of speciallyrndeveloped casks, which are compatible with both the technology of Russian-designedrnresearch reactors and the technology of the reprocessing plant in the Russian Federation.
