The ubiquitous serial port has been used since the very early days of computing and for a long time was the main method for sending and receiving serial data. While hardware serial ports have largely disappeared from all new computers, serial ports and much of the old technology continues to be used. You will find many devices that connect to a computer via a USB lead often create a virtual serial port in software and use that to pass data to and from a peripheral device.
