SOURCE-RELATED CHARACTERISTICS OF RADIOACTIVE PARTICLES: A REVIEW

A significant fraction of radionuclides released by nuclear events, for instance nuclear weapons tests, nuclear reactor accidents, and fires involving nuclear installations is associated with particles. Furthermore. Effluents from nuclear reactors and reprocessing plants under normal operating conditions contain radionuclides in particulate and colloidal form. Radioactive particles are also observed in the vicinity of radioactive waste dumped at sea. Following nuclear test, the particle composition and characteristics were found to be device and shot dependent.
