Homebrew radio is amateur radio slang for home made radio. Any radio equipment that you build yourself can be regarded as homebrew. A homebrew project might be as simple as a wire aerial or as complicated as a state-of-the-art, all band, all mode transceiver. Your homebrew project can be built from your own design or from a published design. You might choose to purchase a complete kit containing all components and detailed instructions or you may use components from the bottom of the junk-box. This is not a universally accepted definition of homebrew radio. A few amateurs will argue that to be 'truly homebrew' a project must be built from scratch using your own design. I have even heard one amateur say that a project can not really be considered homebrew unless the constructor uses only home made components! As I don't know how to go about making a point-contact transistor from a lump of coal, I will continue to use mass produced components for now.
