The IOTA community received some extremely bad news in February when word came through about the death of Jim Smith, VK9NS on Norfolk Island. Jim was a very well known DXpeditioner and DX operator and had been the IOTA checkpoint for Australia and New Zealand for many years until his recent retirement.rnPropagation. The days are now getting longer and propagation conditions are approaching one of their two peaks for the year. It always seems odd to me that conditions are better in the spring and autumn than in the summer when the sun is at its highest over the northern hemisphere. But, such are the mysteries of propagation. This is also the time of year when DXpeditioners start making their plans for activating the more difficult new and rare ones during their summer holidays.
