SPEEDY

When I was a kid in New Zealand in the early 1950s we had new neighbours, Mr and Mrs Browne, move into the house next door. I recall they were a pleasant couple, newly arrived from Mother England, and they got on fine with my parents. They had no children of their own and worked together in their newsagent store nearby. They would regularly close the shop at midday Saturday, and early afternoon present my little brother with a copy of 'Beano' magazine and me with 'Hotspur', i guess from stock that hadn't sold during the week. At Christmas time they would invite us in for a little celebration - a whisky for Dad, Pimms No.1 for Mum (probably the only alcohol my parents had all year), and a soft drink each for us two boys. Even better, they would give each of us a Christmas present. I recall that first Christmas, my brother received a Frog Speedy and I was given a Frog Raven, our first meeting with the delightful Frog model aircraft range and probably the start of what to me has been a lifelong involvement in model planes.
