Quaternary fluvial systems of India

The scale of the present-day and Quaternary river systems of the Indian Subcontinent has fascinated travelers for centuries. More recently, earth scientists have been developing their investigations of these special and difficult systems. Some of the difficulty is undoubtedly related to the size of the rivers and the sheer extent of the alluvial plains of northern India. These facts of scale must certainly have contributed to the sense of wonder and reverence felt for the rivers and the Himalayan Mountains that are the source of many of them. Nowhere else on the surface of the Earth do so many people depend so completely, in all aspects of their lives, on such an array of river systems.
