Site formation processes in archaeology: Soil and sediment micromorphology. Proceedings of the 14th IWMSM Session 5, Lleida, Spain, July 2012

The 14th International Working Meeting on Soil Micromorphology took place during 8th-14th July 2012 at Lleida, Spain under the auspices of the International Union of Soil Sciences, Commission 1.1 Soil Morphology and Micromorphology (chief organiser: Rosa M Poch, Universitat de Lleida). The first series of papers from Sessions 1-4 have been published by the Spanish Journal of Soil Science. Session 5 (Site-formation processes in archaeology and cultural landscapes, archaeometry and geoarchaeology) comprised 30 oral and poster presentations. Fifteen papers were submitted to this volume, of which thirteen were accepted. It can be noted here that an important contributor to soil micromorphology for almost half a century was Nicholas Fedoroff (Institut National Agronomique Paris-Grignon and INRA, France) who died this year (2013). This volume is dedicated to his memory as he not only helped develop the discipline in the fields of'soil genesis and weathering' (Session 1 of the 14th IWMSM), but was an international leader in the fields of palae-osol studies and systematic description (Fedoroff, 1982; Bullock et al., 1985; Fedoroff et al., 2010); he was also co-editor of the proceedings of the 7th IWMSM (Paris, 1985), where archaeological applications had their first sub-section (Fedoroff et al., 1987). As importantly, he was a constant help and advisor to many of us, and it is fitting to remember him with this volume as he took such an active part in all the oral sessions at Lleida, including Session 5. His wide experience is sadly missed.
