摘要

Various reasons for the domestication of the ancestors of dogs and cats have been proposed and those ancestors exhibit(ed) a number of pre-adaptations making them attractive for domestication. After reviewing these, the results of breeding, in particular, breed differences in the character traits of dogs and cats, are examined, which in turn are shown to affect the human-companion animal relationship. Lastly, evidence is presented concerning the role of attachment to, and social support by, cats in the interactive behaviour between people and their cats.
