Yorkshire The branch took part in an evening visit to Drax power station on Tuesday 14 June when 24 members, guests and their families were shown round the site and its facilities after enjoying a buffet meal at the Drax Sports and Social Club. Drax is the largest coal-fired power station operating in Europe, its 295m stack at one time holding the Guinness world record for the highest chimney. The station's six steam-turbine generators have a combined capacity of around 4MW, with each individual unit capable of supplying all the power requirements for a city the size of Leeds or Manchester, including the outlying suburbs. The station as a whole is capable of supplying approximately 7% of the UK's power demand and requires 36,000 tonnes of coal per day to keep the boilers running.
