It's a strange time to be alive. Lumber prices are through the roof. Used car inventory is virtually non-existent, and there is a global run on computer chips, certain clothing and even Grape Nuts cereal. Supply chains everywhere have been disrupted-thanks to the pandemic and its ripple effects-and continue to struggle to get back on track. As the dust begins to settle, however, there's s no better time to evaluate the efficacy and sustainability of your organization's supply chains. This month's cover article, "Survival of the Sustainable," p. 16, presents a new tool that can be used to assess the sustainability of supply chains through the lens of people, planet and profit. Awareness surrounding suppliers' performance in some of these areas can inform decision making and help to remove risk. In short, the tool uses the risk matrix, and failure mode and effects analysis in tandem to form the sustainability measurement tool (SMT). COVID-19 prevented the authors from completely validating the SMT, but still, the approach is solid.
