Most of us were taught to view receivers strictly in terms of hardware stages. In a basic superheterodyne receiver, for instance, the signal arrives at the antenna, is converted to a lower frequency through the combined efforts of a mixer and oscillator, is amplified by one or more intermediate frequency amplifiers, and then finally processed through a detector (to extract the information) and further amplified to a level sufficient to drive speakers or headphones.
