Cost pressure overshadows volume growth for corrugated industry in Germany

2020 was a good year for the German corrugated board industry, at least in terms of volume. The producers organised in the VDW, the association of the German corrugated board manufacturing industry, were able to surpass their prognosticated aim of 0.5 per cent growth in deliveries of corrugated board per working day. Compared with 2019, they recorded 0.9 per cent growth during the pandemic in 2020, benefitting above all from the rise in online sales. Consumers building up inventories of food and drugstore items in February and March, and higher demand for refrigerators and freezers, also had a positive impact on deliveries. However, the industry's sales receded by 1.6 percent in 2020.
