We discuss the use of multivariate analysis (MVA) for (a) the overview of processes (process monitoring), (b) for fault detection, (c) for the prediction of product or process properties (soft sensors), and (d) for improved process understanding. The benefits include knowledge about the stability of the process, decreased variability in product quality, improved efficiency in the use of raw materials, and better preparedness for unexpected events.
