Vacuum Sewer System

In the late 1980s, Sanford, Florida, came under an EPA consent order to separate the old combined sewer system that served a 310-acre registered historic downtown district. During dry conditions, wastewater would flow into manholes located in narrow alleyways behind homes and businesses and be carried to a waste-water treatment plant. However, during storm events, combined sewer overflows (CSO) would take a large portion of the waste-water directly into picturesque Lake Monroe, which formed the northern border of downtown.
