Even with approximately 470 highway projects currently underway In Massachusetts, one massive effort is being watched with particular interest. No, it is not Boston's underground central artery project. It is a 21-mi stretch of Route 3 from Lowell to the New Hampshire border that is being widened from four lanes to six. The contractor, Modern Continental Construction Company (Cambridge, Massachusetts), is adding a travel lane and two 10-ft shoulders in each direction, constructing a visitor's center and a park-and-ride facility, making various environmental improvements―and building 47 new bridges along the route.
