The I-290/Hillside Interchange Project

Until early this year, the Hillside interchange of I-290 ? the Eisenhower Expressway―was notorious as the worst freeway choke point in the Chicago area, and one of the worst in the nation. Both congested and hazardous, the interchange, called the "Hillside Strangler" by area traffic reporters, is located at the convergence of three busy interstate highways―I-290, I-88 Cthe East-West Tollway), and I-294 Cthe Tri-State Tollway). In a national survey taken in 1999, it was ranked 13th among the nation's most dreaded bottlenecks.
