Illinois Plant Cuts Ammonia, Gains Time

The Village of Fox River Grove's upgrade not only achieved ammonia compliance, but benefited the entire plant's operations. In late 2002, the Village of Fox River Grove, Ill., located some 45 miles northwest of Chicago, faced a tightening of the ammonia limits in the discharge from its 1.25 mgd waste-water treatment plant. Set to take effect in November 2005, the new limits would be included in the plant's renewed discharge permit. Although the rotating biological contactors (RBCs) at the heart of Fox River Grove's wastewater treatment process were generally able to meet the existing ammonia limits, there was little margin for error, and there were occasional violations. The Village feared that it would take a major process upgrade to meet the tighter limits scheduled in the renewal permit.
