In a setting that includes the Mississippi River, Lake St. John, and Lake Concordia, Concordia Parish, La., has a population that is on the rise. As with any fast-growing community, the parish is responsible for managing many municipal burdens. One such burden is the sewer system— a system that had once served a small rural community would no longer do for a modern Concordia Parish. Most homes in Concordia Parish used drain fields for disposal of sewage. A significant factor for engineers designing the new sewage-treatment system was that the existing drain fields were outdated, inefficient, and notorious for allowing sewage to taint the parish's drinking water. It was necessary to change the existing drain field systems to a modern gravity flow system so that sewage that had already seeped into the ground would not continue to contaminate drinking water.
