One doesn't normally think of the low-key world of public works when we hear phrases like "strut your stuff or "show-boating." On the contrary, even the idea of triumphantly exchanging high-fives or pumping a fist in the air after a snowy sidestreet has been plowed, a pothole patched, or a sewer mercifully unclogged, seems just, well, absurd. But for one week this month, you're allowed. May 16-22 is National Public Works Week. This year marks the 43rd year in a row that the American Public Works Association has sponsored the celebration. It affords a rare opportunity f9r all Americans to focus on "the importance of our public infrastructure and the critical role public works plays in supporting and maintaining it," says APWA executive director Peter King.
