American families spend more on transportation than food

According to a report by the U.S. Treasury Department, the average American family spends $7,600 a year on transportation. A New Economic Analysis of Infrastructure Investment reports that bad road conditions cost drivers an average of $400/year in vehicle maintenance. The analysis also says traffic congestion results in 1.9 billion gallons of gas wasted each year - at a cost of more than $100 billion in wasted fuel and lost time.
