Lebanon, Tenn., is expanding its waste-water treatment facility to turn 64 tons of sewer sludge, used tires, and wood waste into 300 Kw of electricity every day. No incineration or burning is involved. The process, which is called gasification, breaks feedstock material down at very high temperatures in a sealed vessel called a gasifier. About 95% is converted to synthetic fuel gas, or "syngas;" the rest is a high-carbon biochar that can be recycled or sold for agricultural and industrial uses.
