New regulations for bushfire bunkers and shelters

Victorians who decide to construct a bunker or private bushfire shelter to protect themselves from bushfires will have to obtain a building permit from their council under a new set of interim regulations released by the State Government.rnThe regulations and an accreditation process for constructing the bunkers will remain in force until proposed national regulations are introduced in 2010.rnVictorian Planning Minister, Justin Madden, said it was vital for people to be aware of the requirements they need to meet to make their bunkers a safe place of last resort.rnMr Madden said people who chose to construct a bunker or bushfire shelter would have to obtain a building permit.rnIn order to gain the permit, they would need to purchase a bunker or shelter which was accredited or satisfied the requirements of a building surveyor.rnManufacturers of bunkers and shelters will be able to apply to the Building Regulations Advisory Committee for accreditation of their products.
