Considered an engineering masterpiece, the Raurimu Spiral provided an innovative solution to navigating rail lines across the rugged terrain of New Zealand's North Island. The landscape between Auckland and Wellington is characterised by the steep slopes of the Volcanic Plateau to the east and the valleys and gorges of the Whanganui River to the west. Surveys of the area revealed that despite the difficulties and steep descent it presented, the only viable route for the railway was between National Park and Raurimu. Before engineer Robert West Holmes presented his acclaimed spiral design, the only other alternative required a 20km track detour and the costly construction of nine viaducts.
