A word from the parting editor, 4760 pages down the line

Having been since April 2009 Editor-in-Chief of Public Understanding of Science (PUS), and after editing 44 issues, some 400 scholarly papers, on 4760 printed pages with 2.38million words, generating on average five to six citations, suggests a good moment to move on. And it is my great pleasure to know that Massimiano Bucchi (Trento University) will take over the helm of the journal from April 2016. After 7 years, I thought a new team should make their mark. But, as soon as I made my decision public, I felt regret because I will miss the editorial activity of PUS, not least because to work with Dr Sue Howard as the managing editor in London was great fun and balanced the intellectual challenges of taking through many excellent submissions. But, the coming of a new editorship marks a fitting occasion for some observations on PUS-the-journal and PUS-the-field-of-study.
