Change is in the air for public safety communications in 2020 in response to the novel coronavirus pandemic and civil unrest. Change also came during the late 1960s when high crime rates and civil unrest led to rethinking of law enforcement communications. A demonstration by public safety communications professionals before a congressional committee illustrates the point. An August 1969 article in the Journal of Public-Safety Communications "Dick Tracy Talks to Uncle Sam" describes the introduction of new technologies and protocols, while industry leaders also pleaded with the government for access to expanded radio spectrum.
