GIS AND PUBLIC SAFETY: A Healthy Relationship

Analytical cartography was used as early as 1854 when John Snow used a map to determine the source of a cholera outbreak in London, one of its first known uses. Today's digital version, called "Geographic Information Systems," started in the 1960s as a tool for envi- ronmental studies and land management. Over time, a wide range of applications have grown to incorporate GIS' robust problem solving and decision making capabilities across diverse disciplines: real estate analysis, utility and infrastructure planning, marketing and demographics, tourism development, criminal analysis, micro economic studies, geological mapping, health and human services, pollution control, census, etc.
