Radio Spectrum: The Critical Foundation for Public Safety Communications

The new 700-MHz and 4.9-GHz bands provide much needed additional spectrum for public safety communications. Public safety agencies and RPCs are urged to complete regional planning so the capacity at 700 MHz can be fully utilized. Also, agencies should focus on planning and implementing narrowband systems in the VHF and UHF bands to meet the January 2013 deadline to deploy 12.5-kHz efficiency systems. These steps can help improve both operability and interoperability for public safety agencies.rnFinally, given the many years it requires to obtain spectrum for public safety, APCO will remain involved in future public safety spectrum initiatives.
