The ITU's new Secretary General, Yoshio Utsumi, has initiated a series of high-level talks with the main proponents of third generation (3G) mobile services in an attempt to arrive at some form of acceptable compromise on the way forward for IMT-2000, the ITU's brand name for third generation systems. Utsumi will meet privately with representatives from key players involved in 3G mobile services, both in Geneva and in Brazil, where he will host the 16th meeting of the ITU Task Group on IMT 2000.
