Dennis C. Mueller: Reason, religion, and liberal democracy

Professor Mueller is best known within public choice circles for his extensive surveys and syntheses of the public choice and constitutional political economy literatures. His survey and synthesis approach is also applied in the present volume, which brings together a broad range of work on the origins of religion and government, on the discourse undertaken during the Enlightenment concerning reason and religion, and on the nature of liberal democracy. The purpose of the book, however, is not strictly speaking to educate readers, but to persuade them that there are important tensions between all-encompassing religions and liberal democracy.
