Recovery of motor function following partial sensory deprivation has been studied most intensively in the vesti- bulo-motor system of vertebrates (Dieringer 1995; Smith and Curthoys 1989). The process of recovery, called vestibular compensation, is known to be significantly affected by postopera- tive sensory conditions (Schaefer and Meyer 1974).
