Bakers Quay languishes while Lock Warehouse flats sell at Gloucester Docks

The Queen toured Gloucester Quays to see Peel Holdings' newly opened designer outlet in 2009. As she departed along St Ann Way, she saw an adjoining derelict site, and commented that there was still work to do. Her majesty's comments still apply to the entire regeneration of Gloucester Docks: parts are impressive, but conflict appears to have slowed down full development. First, the eyesore: Bakers Quay is a derelict 5 acre site, made less prepossessing in January this year when a building there burnt down in a suspected arson attack. Dick Bishop, proprietor of Gloucester's Evergreen Nurseries, put the family-owned site on the market two years ago, but declined to return calls to ask why he has not sold.
