Nowhere has the John Lewis effect been more in evidence than in Bath. Before Christmas, John Lewis will open a Waitrose Food and Home by doubling the size of its 17,000 supermarket in the Podium shopping centre in Northgate Street. The Podium's independent retailers and restaurants left last year, having traded for years on short-term licences granted by the landlord, O&H Properties. The public library is the only other tenant. Most of the new space will be taken by John Lewis merchandise, and this has helped to secure lettings in the old Habitat store, diagonally opposite and in the next door shop to Waitrose, previously occupied for 150 years by music shop Duck Son & Pinker.
