Office take-up plummets by 70%

Poor office take-up in the Thames Valley in 2009 has brought back memories of the dot.com crash of the early 2000s, when several landlords were left with empty properties.Jones Lang LaSalle's Western Corridor Office Market Report: Spring 2010, published today, shows that take-up nosedived 70% to 620,340 sq ft compared with 2008 (graph 1). It is worse than the 2004 take-up of 634,409 sq ft, following the dot. com crash. This has resulted in 7.8m sq ft of empty offices, an increase of 30% on 2008, while the vacancy rate soared from 14.4% to 18.4% in the same period (graph 2).
