Council vies to block Cardiff office plan

Cardiff Council and the Welsh government are in a stand-off over what should be built on 5 acres in Callaghan Square, south of Cardiff city centre.The council wants an arena and exhibition hall, but the government is set to develop offices.In January last year, the Welsh government paid MEPC £7.2m forthe land, with an office consent and is preparing to develop 100,000 sq ft of offices to attract new business to Cardiff.However, the council considers the site to be ideal for a 15,000-seat arena, a 1,500-capacity auditorium and an 86,000 sq ft exhibition hall, with a separate banqueting area - a project it believes will enhance the prestige of the city.
