Guildford redevelopment plans back under review

The redevelopment of Guildford town centre has been on the cards for a decade. But, a little over a year since the most recent proposals were unveiled in the town's draft local plan, the council and its development partner M&G Real Estate are revising the plans, citing the troubled retail market. The proposals were for 440,000 sq ft of retail space, 65,000 sq ft of restaurants, cafes and bars and 400 homes. Last month, Guildford Borough Council decided to review these plans and instead draw up a mainly residential scheme for the site, which is bordered by North Street, Onslow Street and Leapale Road.
