Increasing revenue. Shortening transit times. Cutting expenses. Boosting rid-ership or carloads. Gaining efficiencies. Those are the primary objectives targeted by today's freight and passenger railroads. And the goals likely aren't going to change. When it comes to envisioning their long-term needs, railroads are proposing or already preparing to be more productive, cost-efficient and growth-oriented in the coming years. Three departments will factor into those long-range goals: communications and signals (C&S), mechanical and engineering (MOW). The departments are putting forth efforts to address mounting needs identified in such critical areas as workforce development and training, technology adoption, work process improvements, infrastructure enhancements, and asset modernization and usage. If they can fill certain gaps or eliminate shortcomings, they'll be better poised for the long term, department officials believe.
