Since the last quarter of century, Atul Kohli has been publishing many seminal works on India. This book is also an addition to that glorious trail, raising many interesting questions on the contemporary Indian politics. He envisages 'New India' as that of post-1980 India, when the economy started displaying a 'pro-business tilt' (p. 1). The book is broadly organized around three themes: political change; India's contemporary political economy; and regional diversity. In fact, in addition to a general introduction and conclusion, these themes are subsumed under three broad chapters, each with a number of sub-chapters. The more conventional design of dividing the book into sections, then separate chapters, might have been helpful.
