Marjorie: When I was 12 years old, I lost an uncle who was my only father figure. He was electrocuted and died on a jobsite. He left behind three children under the age of seven. When you're that young, you don't know what you're going to do. I remember the impact that his loss had on the family and everyone who loved him.Fast forward to my second year in college, I got a call that my mother had just been electrocuted on an electric wheelchair. That completely derailed my plans for the future. I was going to be the first generation in my family to go to college and, with this incident, my life was changed forever. I quit school and became my mother's caregiver. It felt as if my youth had been taken from me. It's really hard when you're a 20-year-old woman trying to figure out what you're doing. Caregiving is an important part of my culture. However, I continued to work, and held a few positions with occupational health medical groups, starting off as a receptionist.
