摘要

A study from University of Illinois at Chicago, "Injuries Associated With Long Working Hours Among Employees in the U.S. Mining Industry: Risk Factors and Adverse Outcomes," suggests that long workdays and new workers are two factors that may heighten workplace injury risk among miners. In the study published in BMJ Occupational and Environmental Medicine, researchers sought to identify risk factors associated with long working hour injuries to determine whether incidents that occurred during longer shifts were associated with fatalities or multiple injured workers.Using MSHA data from 1983 through 2015, researchers identified long working hour injuries, which were defined as incidents occurring 9 or more hours after the start of a shift. The data showed a total of 52,206 long working hour injuries, a proportion of which increased from 5.5% of all injuries in 1983 to its peak in 2015 of 13.9%. Researchers note that risk factors associated with these types of injuries include irregular shift starts, being newly employed, employment by a contractor, metal or nonmetal operations, and mines with fewer than 100 employees.
