Like other professions, the SH&E profession continually seeks methods to improve productivity. As one generation is integrated with another that has never known a world without computers, computer technology is an increasingly important tool. Research indicates that the use of computers is an important competency at both the baccalaureate (Ferguson) and associate degree level [Adams(a)]. In 2001, a Delphi study panel composed of senior safety professionals serving as ASSE chapter presidents was asked for projections regarding the next 10 years in the SH&E profession. The first- and third-highest-ranking predictions dealt with computers in the workplace—first for use in developing and maintaining policies and programs, then with the use of computer-based safety training [Adams(b)]. This article explores some commercial safety package options available, and provides a starting point for readers to research and select the program that best fits their firm's needs.
