Safety Is an Inherently Inconsistent Concept

The pronunciation of tomato was clearly and happily demonstrated in the 1937 film Shall We Dance (a clip can be easily found on YouTube). Taste determines pronunciation. The word, with its alternate sound, refers to the fruit. The pronunciation, which is not important, gives no clue to which variety of fruit is intended. Safety, on the other hand, is more slippery. "Some concepts contain elements that are difficult to combine in a consistent way" (Hansson, p. 1525). Concept is the clue.
