Engine-room fire disables ship off New York

Afire aboard the 439-foot Barbados-flagged freighter Camilla Desgagnes left it adrift 20 miles south of eastern Long Island, N.Y., on June 8, 2005. The fire, which broke out in the ship's engine room, was reported to the U.S. Coast Guard Rescue Coordination Center in Moriches, N.Y., at about 0940. At the time there were 20 crewmembers aboard. The Coast Guard dispatched the Cutter Sailfish from Sandy Hook, N.J., an HH-60J helicopter from Coast Guard Air Station Cape Cod and a 47-foot rescue boat from Shin-necock Station. According to Petty Officer Mike Lutz, with the Coast Guard Public Affairs Detachment New York, the freighter's crew successfully deployed its CO2 fire-suppression system and extinguished the blaze. A firefighting team was standing by onshore but was never deployed. There were no injuries, and there was no need for evacuation.
