Versatile and economical, articulated tug and barge (ATB) units represent the evolution of towing. Advances in their engineering and technology have now cleared the way for them to be used in a wide range of new applications. Although most conventional tugs still continue to operate much as they have for the last century, either by towing alongside or "on the wire," economics, and regulatory considerations are driving the popularity of ATBs among fleet operators.
