Respect is not given to you because of status, it has to be earned. I learned this within my refereeing career. Behaviour breeds behaviour, and through use of knowledge, experience and smart decision-making, mutually respectful relationships are created. Since refereeing football from 2011,1 have seen many similarities to success on the pitch and in business. I discovered stronger people management and communication skills, all within a high-pressure environment. You can have born leaders, but not born managers. Leadership is behavioural, whereas management is systematic, and needs an element of training and coaching to be developed effectively. You need to understand how people work, to be down-to-earth, reflective, and willing to be open and admit mistakes.
