Vocational training has long been regarded as second-best to an academic education -at least by those who've been to university - but the introduction of the Apprenticeship Levy threatens to shatter that illusion. Since April this year, employers with an income of £3m or more have been paying 0.5 per cent of their total wages bill as a levy to be used to fund apprenticeships. But it's not just entry-level roles that qualify. A growing number of universities see an opportunity to meet the higher-level training needs of employer organisations through degree and higher apprenticeships.
